How to Prepare for Sevenoaks School 11+ English

Sevenoaks 11+ English preparation should develop much more than basic comprehension. Pupils need to read closely, infer confidently and control their own writing under timed conditions.

1. Build precise inference

Strong answers move beyond identifying what happens. Pupils should explain what a detail suggests, support the inference with carefully selected evidence and develop the implication rather than simply repeating the quotation.

2. Practise full papers under timed conditions

Individual exercises are useful, but pupils also need experience of managing a complete English paper. Timed practice reveals whether reading answers are taking too long and whether enough time remains to plan, develop and check the writing task.

3. Plan creative writing before starting

A short, purposeful plan can prevent rushed or disconnected writing. A simple three-part structure gives the piece direction: establish the situation, develop or complicate it, then shape a controlled ending.

4. Focus on paragraph development and sentence control

Effective creative writing is not created by adding as many techniques as possible. Pupils should sequence ideas clearly, develop paragraphs, vary sentence structures deliberately and use punctuation accurately. Description should reveal atmosphere, character and emotion rather than merely label them.

5. Use practice diagnostically

After completing a paper, identify the specific skill that cost marks. If inference is weak, practise developing two-stage inferences. If writing loses control, return to planning, sequencing and sentence structure before attempting another complete paper.
