St Paul’s Prep School 11+ English Preparation & Practice

St Paul’s Prep School does not supply past English papers. It does, however, publish an 11+ entrance examination syllabus describing the written papers. Our independent St Paul’s 11+ English practice sets have been designed around that published guidance, giving families a focused way to prepare without mistaking practice materials for school-issued papers.

What does the St Paul’s 11+ English guidance describe?

Following the ISEB pre-test, selected candidates sit written English and Mathematics assessments. The school describes two English papers: Comprehension and Analysis (50 minutes) and Composition (35 minutes). Its emphasis is on boys’ ability to think and express ideas in ambitious, accurate language.

Comprehension and Analysis

The school says the unseen passage may be prose, drama or poetry. Questions can test straightforward understanding, vocabulary and synonyms in context, as well as the associations of words and patterns of sound and meaning. Pupils may also be asked to write creatively from a character’s perspective or in a similar style to the author, using relevant material from the passage.

Good preparation therefore goes beyond finding quotations or naming techniques. Pupils need to explain precisely what a word suggests, how a sound pattern shapes an impression and why a particular detail matters. They should practise distinguishing what the text states from what it allows them to infer.

Composition

The published guidance gives 35 minutes for writing from experience or imagination. Possible forms include a story, description, speech, diary, letter or article. This makes non-fiction writing just as valuable to practise as creative narrative. Successful responses need interesting ideas, a form suited to the task and ambitious vocabulary used accurately, alongside controlled punctuation and grammar.

How our ten practice sets are designed

  • Ten original unseen passages across prose, drama and poetry.
  • Questions on factual understanding, vocabulary in context, sound, language and meaning, plus a brief passage-based creative response.
  • A separate 35-minute composition paper in every set, with imaginative and non-fiction choices across the collection.
  • Separate teacher mark schemes for the comprehension and composition papers.

The 50-minute and 35-minute timings come from the school’s published guidance. The questions, texts and mark allocations are our own practice design: they do not claim to reproduce an undisclosed paper or an official marking scheme.

A sensible preparation sequence

Start untimed so your child can read closely and review vocabulary. Then practise individual analysis questions and short plans for varied composition forms. Finally, complete full papers under the stated time limits and use the mark schemes to identify one reading target and one writing target for the next attempt.
