A practical approach to 11+ English preparation
Effective preparation combines regular reading, thoughtful comprehension and carefully planned writing. Start by checking the format and requirements of each school you are applying to; English entrance assessments differ.
1. Build confident reading habits
Read a variety of fiction and non-fiction. After each passage, ask what has happened, what a character might be feeling and which words support that inference. Encourage precise answers rather than lengthy retelling.
2. Practise comprehension with evidence
Read the question closely. For inference questions, make a clear point, select a short relevant quotation and explain how the words support your interpretation. For vocabulary questions, use the surrounding sentence to work out meaning before checking a dictionary.
3. Develop creative writing
Plan a clear beginning, middle and end. Choose a small number of vivid details, vary sentence lengths deliberately and use punctuation accurately. Leave time to check spelling, paragraphing and whether the ending follows naturally from the opening.
4. Use timed practice thoughtfully
Begin without a timer to establish technique, then introduce timed work as confidence grows. Review mistakes and practise the specific skill that caused difficulty rather than repeating whole papers without feedback.
