Magdalen College School 11+ English Creative Writing Practice

Magdalen College School 11+ creative writing preparation

Magdalen College School’s published 11+ and Pre-Test sample paper gives candidates 45 minutes for Creative Writing. Candidates answer one question, with 30 marks available, and the school advises spending around 5 minutes planning, 35 minutes writing and 5 minutes checking.

The school states that it is interested in imaginative and engaging responses as well as accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. That makes effective preparation about more than producing a long story: pupils need to plan quickly, control atmosphere and detail, shape ideas deliberately and leave time to proofread.

How to prepare

Begin by practising strong openings, purposeful description, varied sentence structures and accurate punctuation without a time limit. Then introduce short planning exercises before moving to complete 45-minute pieces. After each response, review both the quality of the writing and its technical accuracy.

Start with a free Magdalen 11+ practice paper

The English Entrance Press has created a FREE Magdalen 11+ Creative Writing Practice Paper – The Glass House. It is a useful way to try the format before purchasing further practice.

Using the papers effectively

Use the first attempt diagnostically. Look for where time is being lost, whether the writing develops rather than simply recounts events, and whether punctuation and sentence choices remain controlled under pressure. Subsequent papers can then target those specific weaknesses.
