Preparing for 13+ English
At 13+, pupils benefit from moving beyond identifying what a passage says to explaining how a writer creates meaning. Check the current admissions guidance for each target school before deciding how to divide preparation time.
1. Read closely and infer
Read challenging fiction and non-fiction in manageable sections. Discuss character, setting, viewpoint and shifts in mood. Ask: what is suggested and which detail supports that reading?
2. Build analytical paragraphs
Begin with a focused point, embed a brief quotation within your own sentence and analyse a specific word, image or structural choice. Explain its effect in the context of the passage; avoid merely naming techniques or retelling events.
3. Strengthen vocabulary and accuracy
Keep a record of unfamiliar words encountered in reading and practise using them naturally. Revise sentence boundaries, paragraphing and punctuation so expression remains clear under timed conditions.
4. Plan purposeful writing
For creative tasks, decide on the central situation, progression and ending before writing. For non-fiction tasks, identify audience, purpose and appropriate tone. Reserve time to revise and proofread.
5. Review practice work
After completing a paper, return to questions that lost marks. Rewrite one analytical paragraph or one section of writing using the feedback. Repeated, targeted improvement is more useful than completing papers without review.
