Why preserve the official specimen?
Because there is only one current specimen paper, it is worth using it carefully. Once a child has seen the texts and questions, it can no longer provide genuinely unseen timed practice.
Where is the King's 11+ English mark scheme?
No corresponding official English mark scheme is provided with the specimen paper. Parents can therefore see the current question format, but have much less guidance about the quality, precision and depth expected in a strong response.
How to use the specimen effectively
Develop the underlying reading and writing skills using fresh material first. Then keep the official specimen for a later timed attempt, when it can provide a more meaningful indication of how confidently a pupil can transfer those skills to the King's format.
