The official sample is a 60-minute English paper worth 50 marks. Candidates answer one task in Section A and one in Section B, with 25 marks available for each section.
Free independent creative-writing marking guide
Because no corresponding official English mark scheme is published with the sample paper, The English Entrance Press has created a free independent 30-mark creative-writing assessment framework for practice work. It focuses on content and organisation, technical control, atmosphere, structure, vocabulary, sentence craft and accuracy.

Why preserve the official sample paper?
With only a limited amount of official sample material, it can be sensible not to exhaust it too early. Once a pupil has seen the questions, it can no longer function as a genuinely unseen mock.
How to use the sample effectively
Build the relevant reading and writing skills using fresh tasks first. Later, use the official sample under timed conditions, following the instructions on the paper, and review the response for clarity, development, accuracy and control.
Need more unseen Magdalen-style practice?
The English Entrance Press provides original Magdalen College School-style English resources designed to extend preparation beyond the official sample and provide fresh, unseen practice.
